Highlights of our French Saturday School preschool program
Early Literacy Development
Early literacy development is at the heart of our program. Indeed, these foundational skills are critical for children as they embark on their journey to becoming confident readers and writers of French. That’s why, at our French Saturday School, we incorporate a range of interactive and engaging activities to ensure children develop strong literacy abilities:
- Songs to build and expand vocabulary: songs and singing are integral to our program, helping children grasp the phonetics, rhythm, and flow of French. The activity engages auditory and memory skills, making it easier for children to remember vocabulary and phrases. Moreover, classic French nursery rhymes and interactive songs encourage participation and boost confidence in speaking.
- Storytelling, with animation and visual cues: stories are indeed a powerful way to spark imagination and present new vocabulary in context. Children listen to captivating tales and participate in role-playing to bring the stories to life. These sessions are designed to develop narrative skills, such as understanding and retelling stories, describing events, and sequencing ideas. Additionally, we use ample visual aids to enhance comprehension and keep the children engaged, including illustrations, flashcards and puppets!
- From letter-tracing to answering short comprehension questions, we offer tailored writing and reading activities for various groups: indeed, these activities help Kindergarten children build fine motor skills and familiarize with the written form of the language. Also, they help school age students consolidate the basics of grammar and consolidate the knowledge of the vocabulary learned in the story.
Visual Arts Exploration
Creativity finds its full expression in our visual arts activities. Each week, children dive into art projects that are either story-related or aligned with a specific topic. These activities include:
- Drawing, painting, and coloring inspired by the day’s stories or themes. For example, animals, food, etc.
- Exploring various art techniques to encourage self-expression and fine motor skill development.
Through these activities, children not only enhance their artistic abilities but also reinforce their understanding of vocabulary and concepts introduced during other parts of the session.

French Saturday School Baking
Once a month, our young learners embark on an exciting culinary adventure during our cookie baking sessions. These easy-baking activities are not only fun but also educational. More specifically, children are introduced to basic baking techniques and the world of bakeware, recipes, and ingredients. Some of the key benefits include:
- Vocabulary Consolidation: children learn new words related to food and ingredients in a hands-on context.
- Basic Math Skills: Measuring ingredients also introduces concepts of weight, volume, and shapes.
- Life Skills: finally, baking fosters real-world skills such as attention to detail, esthetics, and hygiene.
These introductory sessions combine creativity and practicality, making them a favorite among children and parents alike. More importantly they will enable children to join our Baking program at grade 3-6 and explore more elaborated recipes.
Musical Exploration
Music is a universal language, and at our school, we use it as a bridge to foster creativity, rhythm, teamwork, and second language skills. Musical exploration is a key component of our sessions, offering children a variety of ways to engage with music:
- Making homemade instruments to explore sound and rhythm.
- Dancing, singing, and playing musical games to build listening skills and creativity.
- Engaging in teamwork activities that teach children to take turns, listen to one another, and collaborate harmoniously.
One of the most beloved parts of our musical exploration is our Singing Circle Time. During this activity, children gather to sing songs together, incorporating simple movements such as clapping or gestures while reviewing a specific vocabulary theme. This not only strengthens their language skills but also fosters a sense of community and joy.
